Waves Dominate Weekend PCSC Meets

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Sophomore Kayleen Hicks’ school record in the 100 breaststroke, and 17 personal bests from 11 competitors, carried Pepperdine swimming and diving to a pair of team titles at this past weekend’s PCSC Relay and Pentathlon meets held at the Cal Baptist Swim Complex.

The Waves, winners of these season-opening meets the last two years, scored 273 points at Friday’s relay meet and 704 at Saturday’s pentathlon. Loyola Marymount was runner-up both days with 225 and 546.5 points, respectively.

Hicks (Chico, Calif./Chico HS) broke the varsity record Friday night leading off the 300-yard breaststroke relay with a time of 1:05.17, which bested junior Dani Kimmel’s (Chula Vista, Calif./Eastlake HS) previous record of 1:05.24 set last season. The three-woman relay that also featured Sara Kallman (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) and Kimmel on anchor was victorious with a mark of 3:20.02, beating the Cal Baptist squad by over 10 seconds.

Pepperdine’s victory in the 300 breast relay was one of four on the night. The Waves also were triumphant in the 400 medley relay, and the 1 and 3-meter diving competitions.

The 400 medley relay finished its course in 3:57.68 as freshman Rachel Cote (Honolulu, Hawai’i/Punahou HS) led off with a 59.01 backstroke split, before being followed to the wall by Kimmel, Francesca Cyphers (Lake Oswego, Ore./St. Mary's Academy) and Haley Wilson (Carpinteria, Calif./Santa Barbara HS).

Cyphers led all Waves with three personal bests. The sophomore established new records in the 100 individual medley (1:02.64), 100 fly (57.72) and the 50 breast (1:11.50).

On the boards, Pepperdine showcased some of the very best divers in the conference as its competitors swept the top-three spots in each springboard event.

The tandem of Shannon Hedman (Fair Oaks, Calif./Loretto HS) and Tiffany Martz (Folsom, Calif./Folsom HS) combined for 394.20 points in winning the 1-meter title and 388.55 points in taking the 3-meter crown. Their veteran teammates Jessica Brakulis (Munster, Ind./Munster HS) and Amanda Pond (Wayland, Mass./Wayland HS) were second off both boards with 375.50 and 386.30 points, respectively, while newcomers Kristin Scribner (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) and Leslie Wade (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) were third with point totals of 344.0 and 346.60.

The Pepperdine divers continued to make an impression through Saturday’s events as all six finished among the top eight in the biathlon. Pond was the team’s top finisher with a second-place 1-meter total of 207.84 points, and was third on 3-meter with 198.40 points.

In the pool, Kimmel was first in the sprint/IM pentathlon and Wilson was #1 in the middle distance/IM pentathlon.

Kimmel’s times included first-place marks of 30.04 in the 50 breast and 1:01.08 in the 100 IM, plus a 27:09 in the 50 butterfly, a 29:38 in the 50 back and a 24.66 in the 50 free.

Wilson won the 200 IM in 2:11.65 and tied for first-place tie with LMU’s Alicia Witter in the 100 free at 54.18. Wilson also posted a 1:00.15 in the 100 fly, a 1:03.04 in the 100 back, a 1:10.83 in the 100 breast.

Madison Krall (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo Centennial HS) finished third overall in the freestyle pentathlon, recording winning times of 1:58.32 in the 200 and a 5:10.27 in the 500 free.

Senior Michelle Fadley (Malibu, Calif./Northwood HS) was third in the middle distance/IM pentathlon with a cumulative time of 6:28.25.

The Waves return to action in two weeks when they play host to the Malibu Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 25 at 10 a.m.
