Waves Finish Ninth at Nike Cup

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s swim and diving team finished ninth overall at the UC Irvine / Nike Cup at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif., on Sunday.

 

UCLA was the team winner of the event with University of New Mexico just edging Pepperdine out for eighth place.

 

The top finish of the day was made by the Waves 400-freestyle relay finishing in 11th place in a time of 3:38.09. The relay members were Haley Wilson (Carpenteria, Calif. (Santa Barbara HS), Tanya Thomforde (Northfield, Minn. / Northfield HS) Loriann Mark (Malibu, Calif. / Malibu HS) and Ali McLeod (Austin, Texas / Cedar Park, HS).

 

In the 200-fly, Mark placed 26th and recorded a personal best of 2:10.17, Jaime Lyon (San Diego, Calif. / Eastlake HS) was 33rd in with a season best of 2:14.70 and Jessell Owens (Winnemucca, Nev. / Lowry HS) had a 56th place finish with a personal best time of 2:17.6.

 

Brianna Blanchard (Aguora, Calif. / La Reina HS) was the Waves top finisher in the 1650-free style with a 22nd place finish in a time of 18:05.9.

 

Four Waves recorded season bests in the 200-backstroke with Amy Nightingale (Paradise, Calif. / Home Tech Charter School) in 41st with a 2:13.84, Lauren Meagher (Eagen, Minn. / Eagen HS) 49th in 2:14.67, Marissa McDaniel (Oak Harbor, Wash. / Oak Harbor HS) 58th in 2:16.88 and Lyon placing 70th with a 2:18:23.

 

Season best’s in the 100-freestyle were achieved by Thomforde in 72nd, with a time of 55.22 and Kat Hakim (Ma On Shan, N.T., Hong Kong) 93rd in 56.35. Also finishing the day with a season best was Sarah Kallman (Franklin Lakes, N.J. / Immaculate Heart Academy) in the 200-breaststroke, with a 47th place finish in 2:32.83.

 

This meet concludes the Waves fall season. The team will return to action January 5-6, 2008, at the UC Irvine Invitational in Irvine, Calif.
