Waves To Play In Claremont Convergence

UPCOMING — The Pepperdine men’s water polo team will participate in the Claremont Convergence this Friday and Saturday (Oct. 5-6) at Claremont-Mudd and Pomona-Pitzer.
MATCH #16 — No. 5 Pepperdine (12-3, 0-1) will face No. 20 Brown (3-1) at the Pomona Haldeman Pool at 10:20 a.m. on Friday.
MATCH #17 — The Waves play University of Redlands (5-7) at 6:20 p.m. on Friday, at the Pomona Haldeman Pool.
MATCH #18 — Saturday, Pepperdine and Occidental (4-5) face off at 10:40 a.m. back at the CMS Axelrood site.
MATCH #19 — At 2:40 p.m. on Saturday, the Waves go up against Chapman (8-7) at the Pomona Haldeman facility.
MATCH #20 — The last match of the Convergence takes place at the Pomona Haldeman Pool at 6:40 p.m. between Pepperdine and Pomona-Pitzer. Former Pepperdine assistant water polo coach Alex Rodriguez is now the head coach for Pomona.
PEPPERDINE VS LMU — The Waves defeated No. 10 Loyola Marymount on Saturday (Sept. 29), 11-9. LMU led for most of the match with the Waves providing a scoring surge in the fourth quarter and preventing the Lions offense from adding any goals.
STANDOUTS — Sophomore attacker J.P. MacDonell (Redwood City, Calif./Bellarmine HS) was the scoring leader against LMU with three goals. Junior attackers Adam Hewko (Irvine, Calif./ Servite HS) and Grant Miller ( La Verne Calif./ Damien HS) scored two goals apiece. Sophomore center Clayton Snyder (Seal Beach, Calif/ Los Alamitos HS) was also credited with two goals.
PEPPERDINE IN THE POLLS — The Waves remain #5 for the third straight week.
WAVES IN THE NATIONAL TOP 50 — The Waves were represented in each of the individual and team National Water Polo rankings this week. On the top 50 individual goal scorers list was No. 21 Adam Hewko (29), No. 23 J.P. MacDonell (28) and No. 48 Grant Miller (20). Earning the No. 21 ranking for saves was goalkeeper sophomore Travis Stachowski (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./ Foothill HS) with 57 saves. For team rankings, the Waves were No.13 for team goal leaders (166) and No. 6 for defensive leaders (107 g/a). The MPSF scoring leaders are listed on page four of this letter.
MPSF RANKINGS — Scoring leaders: No. 4 Adam Hewko (29, 2.90 per/game), No. 9 J.P. MacDonell (28, 2.15 per/game), No. 17 Grant Miller (20, 1.82 per/game. Goals against average: No. 5 Jack Curley (Sonoma, Calif./ Santa Rosa HS) GA 43, GAA 7.17, No. 6 Travis Stachowski (GA 44, GAA 7.33). Goalie saves: No. 3 Stachowski (57, SPG 9.50), No. 9 Curley (42, SPG 7.00).

UP NEXT —The Waves will travel to Irvine for the SoCal Tournament, hosted by UC Irvine on Oct. 13-14.
JACK KOCUR — Coach Jack Kocur served as interim head coach for the 2006 season, and this will be his first season as head coach as he takes over for Terry Schroeder who is serving as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team. Kocur was a member of Pepperdine’s 1997 national championship team, earning first All-American honors as a senior. Kocur had spent four seasons as an assistant under Schroeder prior to the 2006 season. Former Pepperdine player William Rodriguez is in his second season as assistant coach.
PEPPERDINE HISTORY — In its first 33 seasons, the Pepperdine water polo program has posted an overall record of 596-363, including a 165-104 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record. The Waves have posted 13 20+ win seasons and advanced to the NCAA Championships 12 times, claiming the program’s lone national title in 199
