TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Pepperdine men’s tennis team qualified three singles players to the quarterfinals of the Crimson Tide Fall Championships, hosted by Alabama. One doubles team advanced to the main draw semifinals and the other team advanced to the consolation semi-finals.
Junior Omar Altmann (Cairo, Egypt) defeated Pete Necajevs (MSU) 6-3, 6-4, sophomore Mahmoud Kamel (Paris, France) defeated Francisco Redondo (AUM) 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 and freshman Alex Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico) defeated Diego Machuca (So. Miss.) 6-4, 7-6 (2). The quarterfinals begin tomorrow at 10 a.m. with Moreno vs. Robertson (Jacksonville), at 11 a.m., Altmann vs. Sanaki (AUM) and at 11:30 a.m., Kamel vs.Smith (Ga. Tech.). Sophomore James Lemke (Melbourne, Australia) was defeated in the first round by Alberto Gonzalez (AUM) 0-6, 7-5, 6-2.
The team of Altmann / Moreno defeated Lloyd / Watson (RAD) 8-6 in the first round and went on to down Anic / Arendt (So. Miss.) 8-1 in the quarterfinals. The duo will face Myneni / Walston of Alabama in the semifinals immediately following the singles competition. Kamel/Lemke were defeated in the first round of doubles play by Delass / Silver (Samford) 8-6. However, they moved on to the consolation round and defeated Chomette / Mauser (Troy) 8-1. Due to a bye in the quarterfinals, they advance to semifinals to be played after the singles competition on Saturday.
