MALIBU, Calif. -- After posting a resounding season-opening win, the Pepperdine women’s swimming and diving team will host the Malibu Invitational on Saturday Oct 27, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial pool.
The Waves will be one of seven teams scheduled to compete, as they will be joined by LMU’s women’s team and the men’s and women’s teams from Cal Baptist, La Verne, Soka University, Cal Lutheran and Cal Poly.
“It's been a really difficult week, but the meet's coming at a good time,” Pepperdine coach Nick Rodionoff said. “We just need to focus and compete and get back in the swing of things. Swimming in a meet will hopefully clear their heads.”
The Waves captured the season-opening PCSC Pentathlon and Relays in Riverside, Calif. from Oct. 12-13. The Waves finished with 282 points, 77 points ahead of second-place Loyola Marymount. The Waves finished the meet by claiming first place in 13 individual events, eight relay events and both diving events. The Waves set 58 individual personal bests, and Loriann Mark (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) recorded the third-fastest time in school history in the 500-yard freestyle (5:07.10).
Despite missing practice time due to the fires in Malibu, the Waves are looking forward to the meet being held in their own pool.
“It's an advantage to be at home,” Rodionoff said. “That will get them excited. The fires couldn't have happened at a worse time since we were swimming really well, but we'll recover. The big thing we're trying to do in this meet is make qualifying times for some championship meets later in the year.”
