MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine men’s tennis team continued to show their depth and strength as five single players and two doubles teams advanced to the next round of the Division I Men’s ITA Regionals, Thursday. Pepperdine is hosting the six-day event at the Ralph – Straus Tennis Center.
No.1 seed senior Andre Begemann (Blomberg, Germany / Santa Fe College) defeated Jacek Twarowski (LMU) 6-4, 6-2, No. 4 seed sophomore Bassam Beidas (Cairo, Egypt / Manor House School) defeated Joe Cartledge (UC Riverside) 6-3, 6-3, sophomore Mahmoud Kamel (Paris, France /Lycee Francais du Caire ) defeated Matt Brooklyn (ASU) 7-6, 2-6, 6-2, . freshman Alex Moreno (Queretaro, Mexico / John F. Kennedy HS) defeated Craig Faulk (Hawaii) 6-0, 6-0 and No. 9 seed, sophomore James Lemke (Melbourne, Australia / Carey Baptist Grammar School) defeated Bijan Hejazi (UCS) 6-2, 6-0. Junior Troy Aiken (West Hills, Calif. / El Camino Real HS) defeated Sebastian Ko (UC Riverside) 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the next level of the consolation round. Jeremy Drean (UCLA) defeated Stuart Keplar (Dallas, Texas / J.J. Pearce HS) 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 and ., junior Omar Altmann (Cairo, Egypt / Deutsche Evangelische) was defeated by Dean Jackson (San Diego) 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles action, No. 2 seed Altman - Begemann defeated Gogin – Konigsfeldt (UCSB) 8-1 and No. 5 seed Beidas – Lemke defeated Berhof – Twarowski (LMU) 8-5. No. 8 Coetzee – Liversage (San Diego) defeated Kamel – Keplar 8-5 and Aiken – Moreno were defeated by Berger – Gerst (Cal Poly) 9-8.
On Friday, the competition resumes with Begemann vs. Shitrit (SDSU) at 1 p.m., Beidas vs. Dehaine (UCLA) at 2:30 p.m., Kamel vs. Berhof (LMU) at 2:30 p.m., Moreno vs. No. 3 Abid (UCLA) at 1 p.m. and Lemke vs. Hejazi (UCSB) at 1 p.m. The second round of the consolation bracket featuring Aiken vs. Brogan (ASU) gets underway at 11 a.m. In doubles, Altman – Begemann vs. Alcala – Hazi (UCLA) begins at 9:30 a.m. and Beidas – Lemke vs. Veerepaili – Zapletal plays at 11 a.m.
