Head women's basketball coach Julie Rousseau announced Pepperdine's 2005-06 basketball schedule Wednesday. The season tips off November 18 in Pullman, Wash., against Washington State, while West Coast Conference (WCC) play is slated to open January 6 at San Francisco.
"I am very optimistic about the upcoming season," noted Rousseau. "We lost some key players from last year's team, but we got a lot of experience out of our underclassmen and I am expecting them to contribute again this season."
This year's schedule should provide the Waves with a good measuring stick as to how the team stacks up against the rest of the country.
"I want to play a competitive schedule," says Rousseau. "We open the season with Washington State out of the Pac-10 conference then we play teams from all the major conferences like Pittsburgh (Dec. 19), Kentucky (Nov. 26), Kansas (Dec. 28), Michigan State (Dec. 4), UCLA (Dec. 8) and we are starting a "Battle of the Beach" with UC Santa Barbara. Michigan State was the national runner-up last season so this schedule should prepare us for WCC play and hopefully an NCAA tournament berth."
This year's schedule includes 13 home contests including the Pepperdine Tournament the weekend after Thanksgiving when Hofsta, Indiana State and Kentucky come to town. Other teams slated to visit Malibu this season include San Diego State, Southern and Pittsburgh as well as a full slate of WCC teams.
"This really is an exciting time for the team and me personally," commented Rousseau. "We not only have a new team this season, but a new coaching staff as well. I am anxious to see how we compete. We are continuing to move forward with the program and I feel like this year's schedule will help us build towards being one of the best teams in the country."
