Owings Mills, MD - Pepperdine senior Michael Putnam, who finished second at this year's NCAA Men's Golf Championships, was named a first team All-American by The Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA), the organization announced Saturday evening.
The honor comes one day after Putnam was selected the recipient of the prestigious 2005 Byron Nelson Award that is given to a graduating senior and is based equally on a nominee's entire collegiate academic career, collegiate golf career and his character and integrity while in college.
Putnam earned first team All-American honors after being selected second team as a junior in 2004 and honorable mention in 2003.
The senior from Tacoma, Washington, finished this year with a 70.58 stroke to break his pervious single-season school mark of 71.00. He also concluded his Pepperdine career No. 1 on the school's all-time stroke average list with a 71.61 scoring mark.
Putnam's final event as a collegian will come as a member of the 2005 Palmer Cup Team that will represent the United States at the annual Ryder Cup-style competition between American collegiate golfers and their counterparts from Europe. The competition will be conducted June 8-9 on the par-72, 7,201-yard Whistling Straits Irish Course in Ireland.
