Waves Drop 2OT Thriller to San Francisco, 84-81

MALIBU, Calif. - Syreeta Stafford's three-point try from the left-hand corner hit off the front of the rim an fell to the floor as time expired Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse as the Pepperdine women's basketball team came out on the short end of an 84-81 double-overtime loss to San Francisco. The loss snapped the Waves 16-game win streak when scoring over 70 points and ended the team's first win streak of the season.

USF's (10-11, 4-4 WCC) Dominique Carter found a hot hand in the second overtime scoring eight of her team-leading 30 points in the frame including connecting on a pair of free throws with :06.9 left to put the Dons up by three. The effort was a career-high for the freshman and the most points by a Don's freshman since the 1995 season when current USF assistant coach Brittney Lindhe poured in 37 against Gonzaga.

Pepperdine's (8-13, 4-4 WCC) Jennifer Lacy put on an offensive show of her own scoring a career-best 34 points including a lay-up with :03.2 left in regulation as well as knocking down a pair of free throws with :12.6 left in the first extra stanza, both times extending the game.

The Waves capitalized on a three-minute USF scoring drought in the first 20 minutes of play to take their biggest lead of the night, 25-12. But the Dons would start to chip away at the Pepperdine lead with marksman like shooting as they connected on 60.7 percent from the floor, setting a new single-game school record for the Dons. After shooting 50.0 in the opening frame, USF improved to 63.0 in the second half and hit on 8-of-10 in overtime.

USF competed its comeback at the 16:00 mark of the second stanza as it took its first lead since 15:43 of the first half at 60-59. The two teams would trade blows the rest of the way, battling through 10 ties and 17 lead changes.

Lacy scored the final seven Pepperdine points in regulation giving the Waves leads at the 2:11 mark, 61-60, 2:00 mark, 63-62, and tied the game at 64-64 and 66-all.

Daphanie Kennedy ended the night with 17 points, while Stafford finished with 15.

Mary Jane Krueger had 16 points for the Dons, while Toni Russell dropped in 13.

The Waves will return to action Saturday afternoon when they host San Diego at 2:00 p.m. (PT) at Firestone Fieldhouse.
