WCC Race Heats Up as Waves End Season at Home

Feb. 16, 2005

MALIBU, Calif. - With the 2004-05 regular season drawing to a close, the Pepperdine women's basketball team finds itself in the midst of a logjam for the No. 2-No. 6 seed at the West Coast Conference (WCC) post-season tournament the first weekend in March.

This weekend's tilts against Santa Clara (12-11, 6-4 WCC) and Saint Mary's (12-11, 4-6 WCC) at Firestone Fieldhouse will go a long way in determining where the Waves (10-14, 6-5 WCC) will be seeded.

Gonzaga (22-2, 11-0 WCC) wrapped up the league's top seed last weekend, while Loyola Marymount (13-11, 7-4 WCC) currently holds a half-game lead over the Broncos and a one-game edge over Pepperdine. In fifth place, San Francisco (11-12, 5-5 WCC) finds itself in the mix as do the Gaels who trail the Waves by just two games.

In the first meeting of the season, Pepperdine dropped a 74-64 decision to SMC only to rebound by upending Santa Clara, 80-65, two days later in Santa Clara.

Thursday and Saturday's games open a three-game home stand which will come to a close on Thursday, Feb. 26, against cross-town rivals LMU. Tip off is slated for 7:00 p.m. (PT) against the Broncos and 2 p.m. against the Gaels.
