MALIBU, Calif. - Gonzaga's Stephanie Hawk scored a career-high 24 points Saturday night as the Pepperdine women's basketball team was unable to pull out an 11th-consecutive home victory over the Bulldogs. With the 71-54 win, the `Zags maintain their grip on the lead in the West Coast Conference (WCC) race moving to 15-2 (4-0 WCC) on the year.
Pepperdine (6-11, 2-2 WCC) found itself in a major hole when its leading scorer Jennifer Lacy picked up her fifth foul with 6:49 to play. The news only got worse when Kelsey Ball fouled out moments later at the 6:15 mark. An already depleted Wave's bench was reduced to just one sub. Despite being under manned, Pepperdine managed to cut what was once an 18-point Bulldog lead down to 10 late in the game. But Gonzaga would close out the contest on a 10-4 run, securing the win.
Lacy ended the game with a team-leading 12 points but managed to pull down just two rebounds. Syreeta Stafford and Daphanie Kennedy each recorded nine points, while Teiosha George finished the night with seven boards.
For Bulldogs scored in double digits, led by Hawk's 24. Shannon Mathews tossed in 14, while Anne Bailey and Raeanna Jewell scored 13 and 10, respectively.
What was a tightly contested battle in the early goings turned into a 10-point advantage at the half for the `Zags.
Pepperdine will return to the hardwood next Thursday night at it faces Saint Mary's at 7:00 p.m. (PT).
