Bracketology 101: How the MPSF Tournament Works
How the MPSF Tournament breaks down seems wordy and complex so, we'll just give explain it as simple as we know how. Basically, the MPSF allows the top four teams to host during the first round of the tournament that begins Saturday, April 24. BYU, Long Beach State and UCLA should own the first thee positions which leaves Cal State Northridge, Pepperdine and Hawai'i vying for that final spot. If CSUN falls to UCLA Wednesday night and Pepperdine wins at least one match this weekend then it seems as though the Waves will host. If that is not the case then the conference will fall to its tiebreaker procedure it has set in place.
Orange Slices:
Pepperdine is one of the only schools in the nation to broadcast all home men and women's volleyball and men and women's basketball games live on television . . . The station is TV26 with veterans Jordan Mason and Jenna Van Weelden calling the shots . . . The Pepperdine Waves are ranked second in the nation in team hitting percentage (.364) . . . The MPSF statistical leader board calls for several Pepperdine players who are ranked nationally . . . Andy Hein and Sean Rooney rank 7h and 19th in hitting percentage . . . Fred Winters ranks fourth in points and kills . . . John Mayers takes the fourth spot in assists . . James Ka is ninth in digs.
Scouting Hawai'i:
Hawai'i enters this week's matchup with a 16-10 overall and 12-8 MPSF record. The team is led by Pedro Azenha who has 4.06 kills on the season and Mauli'a LaBarre who averages 1.29 blocks per game.
Its Last Time Out:
In the last home match for the University of Hawai'i's men's volleyball team, UC Irvine stole their first win in the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday night, defeating the Warriors in five games, 18-30, 23-30, 30-27, 30-26, and 15-13. By dropping the final home match for seniors Arri Jeschke, Jake Muise, Joshua Stanhiser, Kimo Tuyay, and Ryan Woodward.
On senior night, it was sophomore Pedro Azenha leading the way for the Warriors, with 23 kills and 3 service aces. Fellow sophomore Matt Bender added 18 kills to go with 3.5 blocks, while Tuyay posted 52 assists and 4 kills in Hawai'i's fifth five-game outing in its last seven matches. Hawai'i started out on fire, hitting .388 in winning games one and two, but could not maintain their energy level, closing the match with a .071 hitting percentage in game five.
The Series:
The Waves lead the all-time series over the Rainbows, 28-19.
The Last Time the Two Teams Met: Pepperdine faced the Rainbows at Hawai'i on Feb. 26 and Feb. 28, 2003, where both teams walked away with a 3-1 win on different nights. During the second meeting, Fred Winters paced the Waves with 17 kills.
Movin' On Up: Pepperdine senior Fred Winters is ranked No. 5 on the Pepperdine all-time career kills list, No. 5 in total attacks, and No. 5 in service aces. Sean Rooney is No. 3 in all-time kills with 1,912 to date. He needs 482 more in his career to take over the top spot in the record book.
