Defending national champion Cal State Fullerton and South Carolina, which finished third at the College World Series, highlight the Pepperdine baseball team's 2005 56-game schedule that was announced on Thursday.
The Waves, who will play 11 games against six teams who reached post-season play in 2004, will play a home-and-home series against College World Series Champion Cal State Fullerton (April 19 in Malibu and May 10 in Fullerton) and will face South Carolina (March 4) in the Dairy Queen Classic in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Pepperdine's 26-game non-conference schedule also includes a three-game series against Tulane at Eddy D. Field Stadium (February 25-27), home-and-home series with Long Beach State (March 1 in Long Beach and April 12 in Malibu) and UC Irvine (February 22 in Irvine and March 15 in Malibu) in addition to facing host Minnesota in the Dairy Queen Classic on March 6.
Three teams, Cal State Fullerton, South Carolina and Long Beach State all reached Super Regionals last year while Minnesota and UC Irvine competed in regional play.
Pepperdine is also scheduled to play three-game series versus UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly and at Houston. The Waves-Gauchos' series will include two games in Santa Barbara with the middle game to be played in Malibu.
The two teams open their respective seasons at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium on Friday, February 4.
Pepperdine and USC will also continue their home-and-home series on March 22 and April 5. For the third year in a row, the Waves will host a tournament as they welcome Cal State Northridge, Oregon State and Winthrop to Malibu for the Yellow Book USA Classic March 11-13.
The Waves, who finished 30-32 overall and captured the West Coast Conference (WCC) title in 2004, open their 30-game conference schedule with a double-header at Santa Clara on Saturday March 19.
Pepperdine will once again compete in the WCC West Division and will play home-and-home three-game series against Portland, San Francisco and Santa Clara. The Waves will host Coast Division rivals Saint Mary's and Loyola Marymount in three-game series and will travel to Gonzaga and San Diego.
The two division winners will meet in the best-of-three WCC Championship Series with the victor winning the conference title and earning the league's automatic berth to the 64-team NCAA Tournament.
The NCAA Regionals are scheduled for Friday, June 3 through Monday, June 6, at selected sites. Eight NCAA Super Regionals will be contested on Friday, June 10 through Sunday, June 13.
The eight winners advance to the College World Series that begins Friday, June 17, in Omaha, Nebraska.
