Free Throws Ice Waves Victory Over Playmode

MALIBU, Calif. - Senior Kelli Spencer was 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the final minute of Pepperdine's 87-83 victory over the Playmode All-Stars as the Waves wrapped up exhibition play Saturday afternoon at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Trailing by seven with just over seven minutes to play, Pepperdine finished strong closing the game on a 21-10 run capped by Spencer's free throws. During the run, Spencer scored seven of her eight points on the day, while Kelsey Ball accounted for four points.

Sophomore Teiosha George led the Waves in scoring for the second time in as many games connecting on 8-of-17 from the floor and pulled down a team-leading 11 rebounds.

"I felt really good out there tonight," said George. "There are definitely some things I need to work on, but overall I was pleased with my effort. Tonight [the team] was all on the same page, defensively and offensively. We really played well as a team and that was key for us tonight."

As a team, Pepperdine shot 46.5 percent from the floor as six players scored in double figures. Senior Jennifer Lacy scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half, while Ball and Syreeta Stafford accounted for 10 each.

Rometra Craig led all players with 26 points, while Nicole McCrimmon and Amber White poured in 12 and 10, respectively.

Playmode opened the game shooting 55.6 percent from the floor as it got out to an early 11-2 lead. Craig scored six of Playmode's 11 points and heated up during a 15-7 run mid-way through the second half. Freshman Daphanie Kennedy connected on back-to-back field goals sending the Waves on a 16-7 run which knotted the game up at the 10:19 mark. George gave Pepperdine it first lead of the game at 24-22 as the Waves led 40-39 at the half.

Craig accounted for 16 of Playmodes' first 23 points in the second half as Playmode built a nine-point cushion, 62-55.

Pepperdine will open the 2004-05 regular season next weekend in Fresno, Calif., as it takes on the Fresno State Bulldogs. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (PT).
