OMAHA, Neb. - Sometimes it's not about how you start, but how you finish, and the Pepperdine women's volleyball team completed the Bluejay Invitational on a high note with a five-set win over Arizona.

Maggie Beauer buried 20 kills, a career-high, while Laine Briggs set a career-high and a Bluejay Invitational record 35 digs.

"Today was a very gritty team performance by the Waves by beating a very big Arizona team with a lot of talent," stated Head Coach Scott Wong after the match. "Maggie [Beauer] had an incredible day offensively by taking many tough swings and killing 20 balls!"

The Wildcats held an advantage over Pepperdine until midway through the first set, when a Chloe Pravednikov kill knotted the contest at 13 each. Following an attack error on Arizona, the Waves ripped off five more points to complete a 13-4 run that ended with a 25-17 set victory. Pravednikov racked up three additional kills down the stretch, and freshman Mariia Nikol Dvornikova put the exclamation mark on with a kill.

Set two was a crazy back-and-forth battle that required extra points at the end. Down 22-20, Pepperdine rallied behind a Pravednikov kill and a pair of Arizona attack errors to reach set point. The Wildcats responded with three consecutive points thanks to a pair of Renee Jones kills and took the set 26-24, tying the match at one set apiece.

Moving to the third set, the blue and orange came out with their hair on fire following the break. Pepperdine was up 4-0 in the blink of an eye and set the tone. Arizona pulled back to within one at 10-9, but the Waves owned the momentum in the set. Ella Piskorz got in on the fun and hammered a kill with an assist from Tristen Raymond, and Pepperdine was back up to a four-point lead. The Waves never looked back from there, ending the set on a 9-5 run and took a 2-1 set advantage.

The Wildcats wouldn't go down without a fight in set four, even when things looked bleak once Pepperdine held a 20-17 lead following a Raymond service ace. Arizona answered with six straight tallies and Destiny Ndam-Simpson forced a fifth set with a kill.

Pepperdine never wavered in the tough moments either, and Dvornikova played a role in the victory-securing set. Her kill put the Waves up a field goal at 9-6 before a Kristin Dear attack error put Pepperdine up for good at 12-7. Piskorz was the one to ring the bell with a kill that ended the Waves' brief two-game losing streak, as Pepperdine took care of Arizona in five sets.

GAME NOTES

The Waves held Arizona to a stiff .169 hitting percentage.
Raymond racked up 59 assists.
Four Waves recorded double figures in digs (Briggs, Pravednikov, Raymond, Charis Kai)
Arizona had a slight edge in blocks, 15-13.

Pepperdine has another three matches next weekend at the Alyssa Cavanaugh Classic in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Western Kentucky, who the Waves face Thursday night, host the tournament with Eastern Kentucky (Friday) and James Madison (Saturday) as Pepperdine's other two opponents.
