MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine women's volleyball (2-0) remained undefeated after sweeping South Dakota State (1-1) with a 3-0 victory Saturday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.

It's the first time since 2022 that the Waves begin a campaign 2-0. Chloe Pravednikov racked up 13 kills while Ella Piskorz tacked on another 11. Maggie Beauer chipped in with kills and a dig.

"South Dakota State is a very talented team that won a lot of matches last year, and they did some really nice things defensively that made us uncomfortable, but I am proud of how we responded!" Head Coach Scott Wong said after the contest.

Each team traded blows early in the first set before a Piskorz kill helped spark a 4-0 run that gave the Waves a 9-5 lead. A couple more kills from No. 18 and a Laine Briggs service ace suddenly blew it open to a 13-6 advantage, and the Waves cruised to a 25-16 first set win.

South Dakota State looked like a different team out of the gates in set two, ripping off a 5-0 run to go from down 9-7 to up 12-9, thanks in part to a Waves service error and three Pepperdine attack errors before Hannah Klein punctuated the run with a kill. The Waves showed resilience and eventually took an 18-17 lead following a Piskorz kill. Pepperdine took the momentum swing and ran with it, ending the set on an 8-2 spurt, and led two sets to none.

The Jackrabbits made life tough for the blue and orange for most of the third set. Neither squad led by more than three points until a Chari Kai service ace put Pepperdine up 17-13. The ace was part of an 8-3 jolt, and a kill from Beauer helped seal the sweep as the Waves blanked South Dakota State three sets to none.

GAME NOTES

Piskorz led all players with 16 points.
Pepperdine totaled 42 kills to SDSU's 26.
The Waves also dominated in the assists' department, 39-25.
Pepperdine's defense stymied the Jackrabbits to the tune of a .082 hitting percentage.
