CARLSBAD, Calif. — Pepperdine women's golf moved up to 14th place after shooting 1-over as a team in round two of the NCAA Championship Saturday from Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.Â
Pepperdine's 1-over team score was the eighth-lowest round of the day in the field of 30, as all 11 team rounds of +2 or better came from the morning wave of tee times.
Eunseo Choi (-3) and Yingzhi Zhu (-1) each shot under par on the day to lead the Waves, as Zhu holds a spot in the top-25 on the individual leaderboard heading into Sunday's third round.
The Waves moved up seven spots on the team leaderboard on the day, as the fifth-biggest positive movers on the day. Pepperdine teed off of hole 10 as the second group of teams out in the morning wave.
"It was important that we made the top-15 for the morning tee times on Sunday," noted head coach Laurie Gibbs following the round. "The players fought hard from start to finish today and improved seven shots. We need to do the same tomorrow on moving day to make the 54-hole cut. Go Waves!"
The field of 30 will be cut down to 15 following tomorrow's third round, with the top-nine individuals from a non-advancing team also advancing into Monday's final round of stroke play. The top-eight teams will then advance to the match play format beginning Tuesday.
Eunseo Choi paced the Waves on the day with a 3-under 69, bringing her tournament score to 2-over. She carded a bogey-free round, making three birdies which came on holes 10, 18 and one. Choi surged up to 46th on the individual leaderboard, as her round was tied for the fifth-lowest in the field.
Yingzhi Zhu continued her strong play with a 1-under 71 in the second round, putting her at 1-under for the tournament. Zhu began her day with consecutive birdies on 10 and 11, making the turn at 2-under on the day. She posted three bogeys with two more birdies to close the day, as her 71 brought her to a tie for 21st on the individual leaderboard.
Kylee Choi carded a 2-over 74 on the day, bringing her tournament score to 4-over. Choi was consistent with 16 pars during the round, while making a pair of bogeys. She sits in a tie for 81st on the individual leaderboard.
Jeneath Wong logged a 3-over 75 on the day, moving to +4 overall. Wong began the day with four straight bogeys before settling in. She made par on the next six holes before firing in back-to-back birdies on two and three. Her second round moved her to a tie for 81st individually.
Grace Anderson moved to 9-over for the tournament with 76 (+4) during Saturday's second round. Beginning the round 5-over through eight holes, Anderson came back with birdies on 18, two and four to eventually post the 76.
