ATHERTON, Calif. – The No.6 Pepperdine men's volleyball team (13-4, 4-0 MPSF) swept Menlo College (3-11, 2-5 MPSF) Sunday afternoon in the Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
"I thought our guys did a good job to compete well today and served well again," head coach
Jonathan Winder said. "Andrej moved the ball around and got everyone involved on offense as well. It was good for us to get some other guys in there as we continue to move deeper into the season."
With 13 different Waves getting into the match today,
Matt Mazur got his first start this season as
Grant Lamoureux also got back into the starting rotation. In his first start in over a month, Lamoureux led Pepperdine in kills this afternoon with 11, followed closely behind by
Jose Gomez and
Matt Mazur, who split the runner-up title with eight a piece.
The first set was the closest with seven ties and three lead changes. Staying close through the opening points, Gomez separated the home team behind the service down the stretch as a part of a 8-2 run by the Waves. Mazur put the exclamation point on with a kill to close out the opening set 25-16.
Lamoureux and Gomez did the heavy lifting in the second set, accounting for 11 of the 13 kills for the Waves. With five service aces and a hitting percentage of .417, Pepperdine dominated from the first service. Never getting more than two services in a row, Menlo struggled to stay in rhythm as the Waves disrupted all the opponents offensive efforts. Lamoureux and
James Eadie split the only block of the set as Pepperdine took the second 25-15.
In the most decisive set of the afternoon, The Waves recorded six aces and four blocks in the third and final set. Mazur led the way with three kills as five different Waves combined for 10 kills. With just one error, Pepperdine hit an afternoon-best .600 to take the third 25-12 in the 3-0 sweep. The Waves move to 4-0 in conference play, remaining at the top of the table of the MPSF with UC, Merced on deck.
