ROCKLIN, Calif. – The No. 7 Pepperdine men's volleyball team (10-3, 3-0 MPSF) swept the weekend with the second win in two days over Jessup (6-5, 0-2 MPSF) on the road.
"The guys were in control of the match tonight because of our serve and pass," head coach
Jonathan Winder said. "Jose had a wonderful weekend in all phases of the game. Jacob continues to pass at a super high level and provides a great presence for our team."
Controlling the entire match, Pepperdine was calm and collected coming into the second match against the Warriors. Opening the first neck-and-neck with Jessup, Pepperdine took control of the set by going on two different service runs, one by
Jose Gomez and one by
Ryan Barnett. Five kills from Gomez and an ace from Barnett helped lift the visitors over Jessup 25-18 in set one to open the night.
Set two was a joint effort from the entire team, with five Waves combining for 11 kills. Two aces from
Andrej Polomac and service runs from Hartke and Barnett gave Pepperdine confidence to remain in the lead the entire set, despite 10 ties throughout. The Waves took set two 25-21.
Set three was nearly identical to the second score wise, seeing 11 score ties and 4 lead changes. Hartke had nearly half the kills of the set with five of the 11 total, along with two solo blocks. A night-high eight Jessup errors aided the Waves to stay in control behind the service line. Yet another run from
Ryan Barnett helped seal the match down the stretch as Gomez finished the night with the last two kills for the Waves. Pepperdine heads back to Malibu winning six of the seven total sets played this weekend, sweeping the Warriors 3-0 Saturday night.
