Men's Basketball Suffers Loss at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Pepperdine Men's Basketball (8-21, 3-13 WCC) fell late by a score of 83-73 at Oregon State (15-14, 8-8 WCC) Saturday evening from Gill Coliseum.

Pepperdine held a six-point lead at the half, with the Beavers outshooting the Waves 50% to 36% in the final twenty minutes, and outrebounding Pepperdine 49-27 for the game.

Aaron Clark led the Waves with his third consecutive effort scoring 29 or more points, pouring 32 in on the night to go with three assists.

David Mager scored a career-high 16 points off the bench for the Waves in 16 minutes. Mager cashed in six of his seven field goal attempts while hitting three of four looks from three-point range.

Six Beavers finished in double figures while Johan Munch and Olavi Suutela each logged double-doubles.

"We fought our hearts out, but ran out of gas in the last four minutes of the game," noted head coach Ed Schilling following the game. "I'm really proud of our effort in a tough road atmosphere."

The opening stanza saw the Waves out to an early 8-7 with Phipps hitting two of his first three looks getting the mid-range game going.

The Beavers were cold from three early, going 1-for-8, but got an 8-0 run with four straight baskets to pull ahead 15-8.

The Waves answered right back with an 8-0 run of their own as Clark nailed his first three and then converted an and-one opportunity. A Phipps jumper gave the Waves a 16-15 lead midway through the half.

Mager and Clark took over for the remainder of the half, eventually combining for 29 of Pepperdine's 42 first half points.

Mager came off the bench and hit back-to-back threes, before making two straight driving layups which gave Pepperdine a 34-31 lead with 4:46 left to play.

Clark hit a pair of threes in the sequence as well, on his way to 19 points in the half. Stefan Cicic hit three of four free throws in the final two minutes to help give the Waves a 42-36 lead at the break.

Pepperdine's offense stalled in the early stages of the second half, with just two field goals in the first nine minutes out of the break. Oregon State was able to build up a 54-49 lead during the Pepperdine drought, with an eventual 12-0 run.

Mager and Clark quickly gave Pepperdine back the lead with back-to-back hits from three. The duo would have 14 straight for the Waves, with Mager making it a 62-59 advantage with his sixth field goal.

The game was tied up at 66 with five minutes remaining following free throw makes from Phipps. After Clark answered a Beaver three, the home side used a 7-0 spurt to go back ahead 75-68 with under three minutes to play.

Cicic knocked down a pair of looks in the paint to keep the Waves in it, trailing by five with 1:35 to go. For the second straight possession, Oregon State knocked down a key three to put the game to rest, scoring the final five points to post an 83-73 victory.

Oregon State knocked down seven triples in the second half while pulling down eight offensive rebounds which proved the difference.
