LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Pepperdine women's basketball (15-10, 6-7 WCC) fought late to bring the game within two possessions, but ultimately came up short at Loyola Marymount (16-8, 10-3 WCC) Thursday night.
"We know our start and early response lacked the punch and toughness required to compete on the road," head coach
Katie Faulkner said. "The fourth showed our fight, and we need to lean into that for what's next."
The Waves scored 15 in the first, thanks in bulk to
Meghan Fiso and
Lina Falk. Fiso had the first four of the game while Falk hit three from distance to keep pace with the Lions. Pepperdine was near even after the opening quarter, trailing 15-17.
Outscored 14-23, LMU took off running in the second quarter to take a cushion into half.
Elli Guiney and
Seleh Harmon split the title of leading scorer with four apiece in the last 10 of the first half. Hitting one from deep as the Lions netted three, the home team went to the locker room with a 29-40 advantage.
The offensive lull continued into the third as the Waves put just eight up through the 10-minute stretch. Falk led the team with four points and two boards in the quarter as the Waves stared down an 18-point deficit, down 37-55, heading into the fourth.
Chipping away, Pepperdine's offense woke up and went to work. Twelve by Guiney alone in the opening half of the quarter propelled the Waves to go on a 20-5 scoring run, coming within one possession of tying the game at 60-all. A technical foul on
Shorna Preston halted momentum for the Waves as LMU collected themselves, going on an 8-0 run to put the game away. Pepperdine's win streak snapped after four, dropping the road contest 62-72.
