PORTLAND, Ore. – Pepperdine women's basketball (1-0) beat Portland State (0-1) 59-43 to open the 2026-27 campaign Monday night at the Viking Pavilion.
"Road wins are never easy, but I was proud of our defensive effort and ability to stay connected when it mattered," Head coach Katie Faulkner said. "We have to get better at things, but we are a culture rooted in growth, so that's what we're gonna do."
Getting out to a slow start, Pepperdine was looking for a rhythm as the Vikings seemed to have an answer for all the Waves' offense. As the two squads continued to trade baskets, it was near even at the end of the first quarter with Pepperdine trailing Portland State 13-14.
The Waves defense took over in the middle of the game, allowing just five points in the second quarter. Swinging the score eight, six points from Maggie Mendelson and a three from Zoe Shanahan boosted Pepperdine in front, taking a 26-19 lead into the locker room at the half.
Defense continued to shut down the Viking offense to open the second half, again allowing just five points in the third quarter as the Waves had the best offensive quarter of the game, putting up 18. Seleh Harmon dropped the second and final three of the night for Pepperdine, leading the squad in the 10-minute period with seven as Mendelson was not far behind with five of her own. Heading into the final quarter, the Waves were up 44-24.
The fourth quarter saw the most points of the night as both teams combined for 34 points. After the Waves took the biggest lead of the night at 23, the Viking offense started to have shots fall. Despite outscoring Pepperdine 19-15, the work the Waves had put in the rest of the game provided a large enough buffer. Harmon and Elli Guiney led the squad with four apiece in the quarter as Pepperdine closed the game out to win 59-43.
With 40 points in the paint tonight, Pepperdine found a way to score when shots from distance weren't falling. Maggie Mendelson, the breakout player of the game, is the biggest reason for the Waves' success tonight with her first career double-double, scoring 17 while grabbing 17 rebounds. The graduate also put up four blocks, almost half of the team's 10. Pepperdine has not blocked 10 or more shots for nearly two whole years, last doing so Nov. 27, 2024 at CSUN.
