MALIBU, Calif.– Pepperdine women's soccer (6-3-2, 2-0 WCC) remained undefeated at home, beating Seattle (7-4-2, 1-1 WCC) 3-1 Saturday afternoon in the Vamos Olas match.
"It was a wonderful game today against an excellent Seattle team." Head coach Tim Ward said. "I was really proud of the organization of our team defensively, and to score three beautiful goals was really, really fun. Really excited for our girls, we are staying humble and staying hungry."
On a hot Malibu day, both teams came into the match knowing what was in store for them. Facing the top-scoring team in the conference, the Waves had their work cut out for them defensively.
In what promised to be a high-scoring afternoon based on the 3-2 result last year at Seattle, the Waves got the party started. Off a Redhawk save, Kyra Murphy scored her first of the year in the 15th minute to give the Waves an early 1-0 lead. Seattle answered immediately, leveling the score 1-1 in the 18th minute. With a total of 16 first-half shots, both teams put three on frame as the match remained deadlocked 1-1 at halftime.
Settling into the second half, Pepperdine seemed more comfortable, holding the ball longer for controlled chances on goal. Breaking the tie in the 63rd minute, Julia Quinonez buried her eighth goal of the season off Erin Ha's first collegiate assist. The senior is second in the conference in goals, two back from first place.
Gaining momentum, the Waves kept the pressure on Seattle, rattling off a total of 19 shots, the most at home this year and second-most this season. Paying off in dividends, Pepperdine put the cherry on top in the 77th minute with Ariana Salvador's first goal of the season, heading it into the back of the net. Coming off a cross from Bella Larson, it is the sophomore's first assist of her collegiate career.
Finishing the match with a 3-1 victory, the Waves improved to 2-0 in conference play and 7-4-2 overall.
