Women’s Basketball Lead Slips Away in Loss at San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Pepperdine women's basketball (10-7, 1-4 WCC) lost 51-54 Saturday afternoon in Jenny Craig Pavilion to the San Diego Toreros (7-12, 1-5 WCC).

"You could over analyze the disappointment, but we created a lot of opportunities and just didn't convert tonight," head coach Katie Faulkner said. "Back to work!"

Both squads had a slow start on the offensive side of the ball with the two teams going a combined 0-8 from distance in the opening quarter. Sharing the ball, six different Waves had a basket to be the first to double digits, leading San Diego 12-6 after the first.

Shorna Preston had the first, and one of two, threes of the afternoon for Pepperdine in the second quarter. Meghan Fiso led the Waves with six in the first half. Eight fast break points supplemented Pepperdine's lead, up 27-23 heading into the locker room at the half.

Stretching the lead in the third, Pepperdine had the best offensive quarter of the afternoon, out-scoring San Diego 17-13. Fiso led the way with eight points, while Preston and Elli Guiney grabbed a quarter-high three rebounds a piece. Preston also led in assists down the stretch, dishing out five as the Waves headed to the final quarter shooting .444, up 44-36.

Holding the lead for over 30 minutes, the Waves' advantage began to slip in the fourth quarter. Scoring just seven points, Pepperdine shot .143 down the stretch compared to San Diego's .583. Three turnovers without any points in a three minute stretch would be what turned the tide, allowing San Diego to take the lead with 5:16 remaining. The Waves never regained the advantage, falling 51-54 in Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Pepperdine is back in action at home this Thursday against Pacific. The game will be the Waves' mental health awareness game with a tip-off time of 6:00 p.m. The game will stream on ESPN+ (subscription required) and live stats will be available at pepperdinewaves.com.
