Women’s Soccer Beats Seattle on the Road

SEATTLE — Pepperdine women's soccer (5-4-1, 2-0 WCC) defeated Seattle (4-2-4, 0-2 WCC) on the road Saturday night for the Waves first win of the season under the lights.
"What an amazing result and performance versus a very good and gritty team," said head coach Tim Ward. "Every single one of our women did an amazing job of being a team tonight. The atmosphere was electric as we had a ton of support from our Pacific Northwest Waves alumni and families. It meant the world to our players."
Winning 3-2, the Waves start conference play 2-0 as Julia Quinonez notched a brace, the first one for Pepperdine since Nov. 2 of last season when Megan Edelman netted two against San Diego.
Scoring early, Quinonez shot a rocket through the net in the sixth minute with a beautiful through ball from Kyra Murphy. This marks four matches in a row with a goal for Quinonez as well as four matches for either a goal or assist for Murphy.
The second goal came for the Waves in the 30th minute off a corner kick from Tatum Wynalda. From the set piece, the ball found Leonard who gifted it perfectly to Quinonez for goal number two of the night.
Seattle answered right before half as it would be a one-goal game with 45 minutes to play. A heavily defensive second half led to four saves by Jillian Medvecky as she totaled seven throughout the match. The sophomore now has 42 on the year.
Getting fouled right outside the box in the 74th minute, the Redhawks earned a red card as Tatum Wynalda threaded a ball into the back of the net on the near post side unassisted off the free kick awarded.
With 23 goals on the season, Pepperdine leads the West Coast Conference. The 3-2 result is the fourth time the Waves have scored three or more goals in a match.
Up next, the Waves skip the midweek match before welcoming the Pacific Tigers to Malibu Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. as Pepperdine hosts their alumni match. Lynn Biyendolo shirts will be given to the first 100 fans in attendance as she is being honored as an inductee into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame later that evening.
