MALIBU, Calif. -- The Pepperdine baseball team outhit the Lions 10-5, but stranded too many in the second game of the series Friday afternoon.

The Waves (12-41, 7-16) left 10 on base, struggling to capitalize offensively while the Lions (26-27, 13-10) left just three on as Pepperdine fell 5-2 at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

BIG WAVES

Sophomore LHP Collin Valentine (Dallas, Texas) pitched a career-high 4.1 innings, allowing no hits with five strikeouts.

Freshman infielder Danny Cook (Monument, Colo.) copied his performance from yesterday, knocking a double in the eighth, good for the sole RBI of the afternoon for the Waves.

Senior infielder Justin Rubin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

RECAP

Both teams started out slow, with no runs scored through the first three innings. Until the fourth, the Lions had not recorded a hit, courtesy of pitching from junior RHP Dylan Stewart (Alameda, Calif.). With four hits, LMU got on the board first with four runs, taking a 4-0 lead after four innings.

The next three were scoreless for both sides as Valentine held the Lions from extending their lead, striking out five in his appearance on the mound. Tacking on an unearned run in the eighth, the Lions extended the Pepperdine deficit, making it 5-0 in the middle of the eighth.

Breaking the scoreless drought, Cook hit a double in the latter half of the inning to bring home Nunez, who had reached earlier on a single down the right field line.

Without a ninth inning comeback, despite Rubin's first home run of the season sent over the left field wall, the Waves fell 5-2 to the Lions in game two of the series.
