SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's tennis team didn't need third-set heroics against LMU this time.
The No. 27 Pepperdine women's tennis team made quick work of PCH Cup rival LMU and swept the Lions 4-0 in the West Coast Conference Semifinals on Friday morning.
Unlike the teams' first meeting in the regular season, the top-seeded Waves (13-11, 5-1 West Coast Conference) took the doubles point over the Lions (8-12, 6-3 WCC) and won all six first sets. Alexia Harmon gave Pepperdine a 2-0 lead with her 10th consecutive singles win, then Sebastianna Scilipoti and Anastasiia Grechkina clinched their matches simultaneously on courts four and two, respectively.
With the win, Pepperdine will face the 2-seed San Diego Toreros for the WCC Championship tomorrow at 10 a.m. It will be a rematch of San Diego's stunning 4-3 upset win over Pepperdine that snapped the Waves' 83-match WCC win streak. In the championship match last season, the Waves swept the Toreros 4-0 to win their 10th consecutive WCC Tournament title.
The Waves set the tone in doubles play, as Grechkina and Harmon bolted out to a 5-0 lead on court one. Unbelievably, the Waves won three deciding points to take a double-break lead, yet the Lions held at deuce in the next game for their lone win of the match. On their fifth deuce point, the Waves held serve for the 6-1 win.
Over on court three, Duru Söke and Vivian Yang broke the Lions right away and took a double-break lead of their own. Pepperdine had a chance to break LMU for the match in the ninth game, but the Lions saved a match point at deuce to keep their comeback hopes alive. But with Yang back to serve in the tenth and final game, the Waves clinched the doubles point with a Söke poach on the deuce side.
With the doubles point in hand, the Waves took care of business in singles play. Grechkina wrapped up her first set before everyone else; she won the first five games of the set against Anastasia Bozova en route to a 6-1 first-set victory. Shortly thereafter, Harmon wrapped up her first set 6-0 before most matches reached the midway point of the set.
The reigning Co-WCC Freshman of the Year got the job done first. Harmon and Camilia Samel Druz traded breaks in the first three games to start the second set, then Harmon consolidated the break for a 3-1 lead. Despite falling behind in the eighth game, Harmon battled back to force one more deciding point before holding serve in her 6-0, 6-2 victory.
From there, the floodgates opened. Over on the back courts, Grechkina and Scilipoti took big leads in their second sets to put the match out of reach. Despite falling behind 4-0 in her first set, Scilipoti battled all the way back to steal the first set 6-4 over Fiona Arrese. Scilipoti broke Arrese on both deuce points in the second set to take a double-break lead, then she served out her 6-4, 6-0 win to put Pepperdine up 3-0.
Seconds later on court two, Grechkina served out her 6-1, 6-4 win over Bozova to send Pepperdine to the championship match. The win was Grechkina's third straight and her 14th of dual-match play. When she clinched, the Waves were up in the second set on two of the remaining matches.
