Early Lead Not Enough for Pepperdine

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team got off to a hot start, but went cold in the 10-4 loss to San Francisco at Benedetti Diamond on Friday evening.

The Waves (10-32, 5-11) began the game with four-straight hits and scored four runs in the top of the first, but the Dons (18-24, 6-10) quieted the Pepperdine bats as they came back to win the series opener 10-4.

BIG WAVES
  • Freshman infielder Danny Cook (Monument, Colo.) went 2-for-2 along with two hit by pitches for a 1.000 batting average and a 1.000 on base percentage in game one against the Dons.
  • Graduate outfielder Nick Upstill (Huntington Beach, Calif.) hit .500 (2-for-4) and collected an RBI on Friday.
RECAP

Pepperdine wasted no time as the Waves took a 4-0 lead thanks to five hits in the top of the first. Joe Cardinale (Salinas, Calif.) led off the game with a single to left field before Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third with no outs. Upstill and Justin Rubin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) then hit back-to-back singles to put the Waves in front 2-0 before the Dons starter could record an out. Pepperdine got another hit from Max Bernal (Clovis, Calif.) while Andrew Savage (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) collected an RBI on a fielder's choice to cap off the 4-run first for the Waves.

Tommy Scavone (Pleasanton, Calif.) threw three scoreless innings, but the Dons took a 7-4 lead with seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth.

After both squads put up zeros for the next two innings, San Francisco extended their lead with a 2-run home run to left field in the seventh. The Dons then made it a 10-4 game with another run in the eighth. Pepperdine was unable to get any offense in the ninth and San Francisco took game one of the series 10-4.
