Hits Come Too Late in Midweek Against Titans

FULLERTON, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team got the offense going near the end of the game, but time ran out in the 3-13 loss at TItan Stadium against CSU Fullerton Tuesday night.

With five hits on the night, the Waves (9-27, 5-7) had just two through seven innings as the TItans (17-18, 9-6) scored in nearly every inning to bury Pepperdine by the time the offense found footing in the 3-13 loss.

BIG WAVES

Redshirt sophomore Max Bernal (Clovis, Calif.) had the Waves only extra-base hit on the night, breaking the Titan shutout with an RBI.

Freshman outfielder Joey Damelio (San Mateo, Calif.) hit his third home run of the season for two RBIs in the eighth inning.

Freshman Danny Cook (Monument, Colo.) is the only Wave with multiple hits on the night, recording two singles.

RECAP

Consistent in scoring, the Titans of CSU Fullerton scored one in the first and second inning to put Pepperdine in an 0-2 hole by the time the Waves got the first hit of the night. Cook led the inning off with a single to right field, but he would be stranded in the top of the third.

Similarly in the fourth inning, freshman Brodey Bitove (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) singled to the third baseman to put two on with nobody out after redshirt freshman Cal Wipf (Santa Barbara, Calif.) walked. The next three at-bats would produce an out for the TItans as they stranded two on for the Waves, leaving Pepperdine to trail 0-5.

A combined four runs in the next two innings for the home team put CSU Fullerton up 9-0 with two-thirds of the game gone. With just two innings to go, the Pepperdine bats started to make solid contact with the ball. Freshman infielder Zach Woodson (Long Beach, Calif.) scored to erase the Titan shut-out after singling to right field. A double threaded down the right-field line by Bernal scored the freshman from first base to make it a 9-1 ball game. Now just one home-run back from leading the team, Damelio launched a ball over the wall for his third on the season to score himself and Bernal, giving life to the Waves offense in a 9-3 game.
The Titans struck back immediately, putting four runs up in the following half-inning to erase all progress made by the Waves. Momentum did not carry into the ninth inning and Pepperdine dropped the midweek in Titan Stadium 13-3.
