Women's Tennis Splits Doubleheader in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The No. 26 Pepperdine women's tennis team split a pair of road matches against the No. 57 San Diego Toreros and the UC San Diego Tritons on Saturday.

The Waves (10-11, 3-1 West Coast Conference) beat the Tritons (10-10) 4-1 on Saturday night to end the day on a high note. Pepperdine played with two new doubles pairings against UC San Diego, and the team of Duru Söke and Vivian Yang ended up clinching the doubles point 6-1 at the third position.

In singles, Pepperdine used three straight-set wins to finish off the Tritons. First, No. 67 Anastasiia Grechkina beat Kelly Leung 6-1, 6-0 on court two before UCSD got on the board with a straight-set win on court one. From there, Alexia Harmon won her second match of the day at the third position: a 6-3, 6-1 win over Grace Gamal.

Freshman Sebastianna Scilipoti clinched her second match of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Allison Lian on court four. The Waves were up in the second set of both remaining matches when Scilipoti clinched.

Earlier on Saturday, the Waves fell 4-3 to in-conference rival No. 57 San Diego on the Toreros' senior day. Despite dropping the doubles point and falling behind 2-0, the Pepperdine freshmen rallied back with a late push.

The match between the two WCC rivals simmered for nearly three hours and tension rose as the teams wrapped up their first sets. Like all good rivalry matches, both teams rose to the occasion; each team won three first sets. With the exception of Hannah Read's straight-set win at court four, all of the matches were excruciatingly close. As the afternoon slipped away, the scoreboard held at 2-0, San Diego.

But after grinding for two hours and 40 minutes, the dam burst. In the span of ten minutes, four matches wrapped up — all of them in straight sets — to bring Pepperdine back to life.

Liam Oved led the charge. The Pepperdine freshman got off the court first with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Gabby Gregg at the sixth position. Oved won a pivotal deuce point in the seventh game to keep the match on serve before breaking Gregg on another deuce point for a 5-3 lead. With her roommate Duru Söke cheering her on one court over, Oved held at deuce in her final service game to cap off her straight-set win.

San Diego took a 3-1 lead with a straight-set win on court two before Alexia Harmon beat Kristina Nordikyan 7-5, 6-2 one minute later. Then with Oved returning the favor and cheering her on, Söke wrapped up her 6-2, 7-5 win over Anni Puls in a rollercoaster of a third set.

Despite losing an early break point, Söke broke Puls in the sixth game to put the match back on serve. Puls saved a match point down 5-4 by holding at deuce to extend the match, putting pressure on Söke to hold serve. Söke obliged, then broke Puls for the emphatic, 6-2, 7-5 win that tied the score at 3-3.

When the dust settled and the cheering on the back courts stopped, the attention turned to court one. Like all good college tennis matches, it was up to Pepperdine sophomore Vivian Yang and San Diego senior Claudia De Las Heras to battle in a third set to decide the match.

This time, the moment belonged to De Las Heras. Playing her final match at Hogan Tennis Center, De Las Heras clinched the match with a 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-1 win. The result snapped an 83-match win streak against WCC opponents and was San Diego's first win over Pepperdine since the 2012 WCC title match.

Pepperdine aims to start a new WCC win streak next Friday at Pacific. All schedule updates can be found on the women's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
