Waves Even Series with Pilots in 5-2 Victory

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Pepperdine baseball team had two multi-run innings to score five and take game two against Portland 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field. 
 
The Waves (9-25, 5-6) took the lead from the Pilots (14-20, 7-3) in the second inning and never looked back, scoring three in the sixth for the decisive victory. 
 
BIG WAVES
 
Graduate RHP Matthew Boyer (Edwardsville, Ill.) pitched for 7.2 innings recording a career-high seven strikeouts with only two walks, allowing just one run.
 
Senior infielder Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) hit a two-run home run in the third inning for a 2-1 lead, holding it down defensively at third base.
 
Freshman infielder Danny Cook (Monument, Colo.) had a team-high two RBIs with a double through center field in the sixth inning.

Getting out in front early, Portland secured a run with four singles in the first to Pepperdine in the hole 0-1 after one. After the first inning, the Edwardsville native Boyer put on a clinic, pitching for a total of 7.2 innings without another run allowed.
 
Gaining momentum in the third inning, junior RJ Jimerson (Chicago, Ill.) took advantage of a Pilot error, finding himself on second base with one out. Coming up to the plate with two outs, Nunez nailed his fourth home run of the season, leading the Waves, over the left-center field wall for two RBIs to give Pepperdine a 2-1 lead at the end of the three. 
 
Zeros through the next two innings by both dugouts kept it a 2-1 game headed into the sixth. Three hits, including Cook's third double of the year, scored three as the Waves jumped out to the largest lead of the series at 5-1.
 
Boyer continued to dish on the mound, allowing just one extra-base hit before redshirt sophomore Adam Troy (Houston, Texas) collected his sixth save of the year despite allowing a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, securing the 5-2 Saturday win.
