Lack of Offense Leads to Series Loss

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team fell late in Sunday afternoon's game, dropping the series to San Diego.

The Waves (6-21, 2-4) took the lead after being down in the fourth inning, but two home runs by the Toreros (6-21, 3-3) in the seventh would prove to be enough in the series finale as Pepperdine lost at Fowler Park 6-2 Sunday afternoon.

BIG WAVES

Senior catcher Andrew Savage (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) had the first extra-base hit of the afternoon for the Waves, tying the game in the fourth inning.

Freshman outfielder Brodey Bitove (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) followed Savage's lead with a double just two batters later to give Pepperdine the 2-1 advantage in the fourth.

RECAP

Scoring in the first inning, San Diego took an early 1-0 lead after one. The following three innings did not see any production from either team and the Waves took the lead for the first time since Friday night in the top of the fifth inning.

As the first baserunner of the fourth, senior shortstop Justin Rubin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) was hit by a pitch, advancing to second on a wild pickoff attempt by the Torero pitcher. With a double down the left field line, Savage got Pepperdine on the board, scoring Rubin from second to tie the game up. After a groundout, Bitove switched places with his fellow Canadian, doubling to center field to give the Waves a 2-1 advantage in the middle of the fifth inning.

San Diego got one back in a hurry in the bottom half of the inning and with four to go, it was tied 2-2.

Bats went quiet on the Waves side and two home runs from the Toreros would create a 5-2 lead at the end of seven for San Diego. Tacking one more on without an answer from Pepperdine, the Toreros took the series, defeating the Waves 6-2 Sunday afternoon.
