MALIBU, Calif. — Coming off a win over Portland in the West Coast Conference opener, the No. 21 Pepperdine women's tennis team heads across town to face the LMU Lions in a PCH Cup rivalry match on Sunday.
First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. If available, all live stream and live stat links can be found on the women's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
MATCH 16: #21 Pepperdine (7-8, 1-0 WCC) vs. LMU (4-8, 2-0 WCC) | Sunday, March 30 | 2 p.m. PT | LMU Tennis Center | Los Angeles, Calif.
SCOUTING THE WAVES
With their first conference win of the season under their belts, the No. 21 Pepperdine Waves take the short trip to LMU to extend their streak of 81 consecutive conference dual matches — a streak dating back to 2015.
This past Sunday's 6-1 home win over Portland was a breath of fresh air for the Waves, who took their lumps in non-conference play against some of the nation's best teams. Although five of Pepperdine's six players in the lineup were making their conference debuts, the Waves handled Portland easily. Four of Pepperdine's five singles wins were in straight sets — and nearly all were blowouts.
A positive development for the Waves was Liam Oved's return to the lineup. The freshman made her WCC debut at the sixth position with a lopsided 6-1, 6-0 win, which was one of many lopsided results for the Waves. Vivian Yang, Alexia Harmon, Duru Söke and Oved lost just eight games combined in their straight-set wins.
So far, Pepperdine's freshman duo of No. 68 Anastasiia Grechkina and Harmon lead the team with nine dual-match wins, while Yang isn't far behind with eight. Yang and Harmon go into this weekend riding two-match win streaks at the second and third positions, respectively.
The Waves own a 43-2 advantage over the Lions in the all-time series. Pepperdine has won the last 25 matches against LMU, and the last Lions' win was a 4-3 home victory in 2003.
ACROSS THE NET
Picked to finish fourth in the WCC Preseason Poll, the LMU Lions have started conference play 2-0 with wins over Portland and Santa Clara. Yet the Lions are entering the hardest stretch of the WCC slate: They'll travel to No. 64 San Diego on Friday before hosting Pepperdine and No. 52 Washington State.
Sunday will be a big match for the Lions, who have squared off against a Big West-heavy non-conference schedule this season. Although LMU faced off against Arizona, Arizona State and UCLA earlier this year, the Lions were swept by all three Power-4 opponents. Like most teams, the match against Pepperdine will likely be the biggest of the year for the Lions, who are looking to break through into the WCC's top tier.
Graduate senior Stefania Rogozinska-Dzik is one of four super seniors on the LMU roster, which has four upperclassmen and four underclassmen. She leads the team at the top spot in the singles lineup, where she has been a reliable contributor with a 10-5 record. The reigning two-time WCC Singles Player of the Week has won seven of her last nine matches at the first position; her two losses in that span were three-set losses to UCSB All-American Amelia Honer and Harvard's Holly Fischer. Both are understandable.
The rest of the lineup is searching for more consistency. Freshman Camilia Samel Druz has won her last two matches at the second position, yet the Lions have a sub-.500 record at every second-through-fifth position.
LMU has one nationally ranked doubles pairing: No. 56 Stefania Rogozinska-Dzik and Anastasia Bozova, who have a 6-5 record this year. The duo has helped the Lions take the doubles point in five of their 12 matches heading into the San Diego match.
WHAT'S NEXT
Next Friday, the Waves will head to Seattle to play No. 20 Washington for their penultimate non-conference match. First serve is scheduled for noon. All pertinent information can be found on the women's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
