Offensive Burst Carries Waves Over Toreros

SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The Pepperdine baseball team took game one against the Toreros after a flurry of runs in the first half of the game, securing the 6-5 victory.
Â
The Waves (6-19, 2-2) outlasted the Toreros (4-21, 1-3), capitalizing on San Diego mistakes while locking down defensively to never give up the lead after scoring in the second inning.Â
Â
BIG WAVES
Â
Freshman infielder Danny Cook (Monument, Colo.) hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run bomb in the second inning to give the Waves the lead.
Â
Graduate outfielder Nick Upstill (Huntington Beach, Calif.) was 2-for-3 on the night with two RBIs on a bases-clearing double, walking his other two appearances at the plate.
Â
Redshirt sophomore Adam Troy (Houston, Texas) has cemented himself as the go-to in a save situation, allowing just one hit and no runs scored in tonight's game.
Â
RECAP
Â
With the first score of the night for either side, Cook nailed a two run shot off the scoreboard in the top of the second inning, scoring redshirt sophomore Max Bernal (Clovis, Calif.) who reached on a walk to give Pepperdine an early 2-0 lead.
Â
San Diego responded immediately in the bottom half of the second with a solo home run, cutting the Waves lead in half 2-1 at the end of the second. Taking advantage of Torero errors in the top of the third, the Waves were able to extend the lead back to two, leading 3-1 after Upstill, who reached on a walk, found his way around the bases with the help of a Bernal single.
Â
No change in the bottom half of the third allowed Pepperdine to score three insurance runs in the fourth to lead 6-1. After senior utility player Andrew Savage scored, a single by freshman outfielder Brodey Bitove (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and a successful bunt by redshirt sophomore outfielder Joe Cardinale (Salinas, Calif.) put two on for Upstill to score them both on a double drilled to right-center field. At the break in the fourth, the game seemed to be under control.
Â
Bringing themselves right back into the game, San Diego scored four in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 6-5 ballgame.
Â
Neither side would score again, as Troy recorded his fourth save on the season to secure the 6-5 series-opening victory for the Waves. Redshirt Junior RHP Tommy Scavone (Pleasanton, Calif.) picks up his first win of the year, moving to 1-1 on the season.
