SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO Calif. — After picking up their second win over a ranked opponent last week, Edward Winter and Hugh Winter were named the West Coast Conference Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday.
This is the first weekly honor for the Winter brothers as a doubles pairing. Pepperdine is one of two schools with all three double teams earning WCC Doubles Team of the Week awards. All told, the team has claimed seven weekly conference awards this season, which ties San Diego for the most of any school in the league.
The Winter brothers were instrumental in Pepperdine's 4-1 upset win over then-No. 9 Columbia last Thursday. Playing against No. 35 Michael Zheng and Nicolas Kotzen, the Winters upset the Lions 6-2 at the first doubles position.
Their match was not close. Edward and Hugh never faced a deciding point in their service games, and the Winter brothers were up a break for the majority of the match. Edward and Hugh broke the Lions in the fifth game, then took a double break lead in the seventh game when Zheng netted a forehand from Edward Winter. With Hugh Winter behind the service line, the brothers wrapped up their 6-2 win with an unforced Columbia error.
Thanks to the Winters' quick win, the Waves went on to take the doubles point and eventually upset another top-10 team at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Edward and Hugh have four dual-match wins this spring.
The Waves resume WCC play by visiting No. 71 Santa Clara on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for noon. All pertinent schedule updates can be found on the men's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
