Pepperdine Celebrates Senior Day

MALIBU, CALIF. –  The Pepperdine women's basketball team hosted Oregon State in their final home game of the season, falling to the Beavers 73-46.

The Waves (8-21, 3-17) celebrated nine seniors –  Hailey Johnson, Ella Brubaker, Malia Mastora, Ornela Muca, Helena Friend, Makena Mastora, Emerita Masharie, Megan Harkey, and Maggie Vick – before the game today

BIG WAVES

Senior Ornela Muca (Athens, Greece) led the Waves with 14 points, including three from distance.

Defensively, senior Makena Mastora (Alameda, Calif.) had a team-high five rebounds, contributing 12 points of her own.

KEY STATS

WIth 26 rebounds, Oregon State outrebounded Pepperdine by 15 with 41.

The Beavers were lights out from distance, shooting .625 compared to the Waves' .353.

Pepperdine was more aggressive on defense with six steals compared to Oregon State's four.

RECAP

Offense was off to a slow start on senior night, scoring just eight points in the first quarter. Mastora had the first basket from beyond the arc for the Waves in the second quarter with 5:53 to go until half, cutting the deficit to single digits. After a free throw by Muca, the Beavers went on a 11-0 run heading into the break, leading the Waves 39-18.

Struggles to find the basket continued into the second half and two baskets from the field for the majority of the third quarter allowed Oregon State to widen their lead. Muca hit a three to end the quarter as Pepeprdine trailed 54-26 at the end of the third.

Points from distance by three different Waves highlighted the fourth quarter as Muca, Mastora, and senior Emerita Mashaire (Helsinki, Finland) found the basket for three. Despite a 20 point performance in the fourth, it would not be enough to catch up to the Beavers as the Waves fall in the season finale at Firestone 46-73.
