EVANSTON, Ill. — Wrapping up the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championships with a win, the #15 Pepperdine women's tennis team beat Northwestern 4-1 in the Combe Tennis Center Sunday night.
Freshman Alexia Harmon clinched for the Waves (2-5) with a straight-set win at the fifth position, giving the Waves their first win indoors of the 2025 season. And although the Wildcats (4-4) took one doubles match and a singles match, the Waves were in control the entire time with straight-set wins from Savannah Broadus and Anastasiia Grechkina atop the lineup to fend off Northwestern.
All three doubles results were one-sided. While the Wildcats struck first with a 6-1 win on court one, the nation's seventh-ranked doubles team of Savannah Broadus and Vivian Yang played free and relaxed en route to a 6-2 rout atop the lineup. Less than a minute after the Waves won on court one, Grechkina clinched the doubles point with an ace to seal her and Harmon's 6-3 victory.
The top half of Pepperdine's lineup quickly went to work in singles play, as #80 Yang sped through her first set 6-1 and Grechkina won her first set 6-3 on court two. But Grechkina was the first one off the court thanks to breaking Erica Jessel on deuce point in the first game and then taking a double-break lead. Jessel managed to win one break point in the seventh game, but Grechkina rattled off three-straight points before serving out the match two points later for her 6-3, 6-2 victory.
One court over, #16 Broadus got a much-needed straight-set win over Mika Dagan Fruchtman. Like Grechkina, Broadus won her first set 6-3 before winning four consecutive games in the second set. The Pepperdine All-American easily broke Dagan Fruchtman one final time in the sixth game before capping off her 6-3, 6-1 win with an ace on match point.
Trailing 3-1, Northwestern made a late push on all remaining courts, yet the freshman Harmon quashed Kiley Rabjohns' comeback attempt in a tiebreak first set. After Harmon held serve in the 12th game to force a tiebreak, the freshman went on a 4-1 run to start the breaker. Rabjohns never pulled within two points of Harmon, and Harmon eventually broke Rabjohns on set point to win 7-6 (3).
From there, Harmon held serve on deciding point to open the second set before taking a double-break lead. Rabjohns broke Harmon in the fifth game to get on the board, but Harmon broke back and entered her final service game up 5-1. After Rabjohns battled through several lengthy points to face deuce point, Harmon held serve for the match for her 7-6 (3), 6-1 win to clinch for the Waves.
