LOS ANGELES — The #28 Pepperdine women's tennis team got wins from Duru Soke and Vivian Yang, yet the #30 UCLA Bruins clinched the match before both players got off the court in a 5-2 road loss on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bruins (5-2) took the doubles point and won straight-set matches on four courts before the Waves (4-7) got on the board. Playing against highly-touted freshman Olivia Center, Soke broke Center on deciding point for her 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win on court six.
In a battle between ranked opponents, #101 Yang provided the highlight of the match for Pepperdine with her come-from-behind 6-7 (5), 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) win over #49 Elise Wagle.
After losing the first set in a tiebreaker, Yang quickly went up a break in the second set and broke Wagle on deciding point to force a third set. Then in the 10-point tiebreaker, Yang rattled off the first five points, which effectively sealed the match. Wagle would pull within four points just once, but Yang finished off Wagle for her first ranked win of the dual match season.
The Waves wrap up the week with a match at #21 USC this Saturday. First serve is at 1 p.m.
