RECAP

From tip-off, Pepperdine was hungry for a win. The Waves had something to prove in Firestone Fieldhouse after dropping their first home game of the season against Santa Clara in gut-wrenching fashion Dec. 21.

With the first points of the game, senior Malia Mastora (Alameda, Calif.) made the first three layups for the Waves as the home team jumped out to an early lead. A pair of threes from Sotell and Makena extended Pepperdine's lead with a 16-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

After a quick three made by the Toreros, the Waves went on a 13-0 scoring run to consume the majority of the second quarter. Graduate Ornela Muca (Athens, Greece) would score four to end the half and counter San Diego's efforts of gaining ground in the deficit. At the half, Pepperdine was up 11, leading 33-22.

The third quarter was the best performance of the night for the Waves, scoring 19. Brubaker more than doubled any teammate in the 10-minute period, scoring seven, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field. Dominant on the boards, Pepperdine snatched 13 rebounds in the quarter, compared to San Diego's three. With ten minutes left to play, the Waves were up 52-37.

Closing out the game, Pepperdine hunkered down defensively, holding San Diego to under 30 percent from the field, including 0-for-2 from three. Brubaker had five of the Waves' 11 points to wrap up the fourth quarter.

The women's basketball team moves to 4-1 inside Firestone Fieldhouse this season with a 63-49 win. This marks the third game this season Pepperdine has outshot their opponent, moving to 2-1 when they do so.
