The Pepperdine women's soccer team fell 0-4 to Utah State in the first match of the season at Waipi'o peninsula soccer complex in Honolulu, Hawai'i Thursday night.
Outshot 18-5, including 8-3 shots on goal, the Waves struggled to match the Aggies intensity throughout the match. Pepperdine (0-1-0) has won or tied every season opener since the COVID Spring 2021 season, where they hosted UCLA in a 3-0 loss. Utah State (1-0-0) opened up the scoring 21 minutes into the match with a shot into the bottom left-hand side of the goal. Just over three minutes later, the Aggies doubled the deficit with a goal in the exact same spot, taking a 2-0 lead over the Waves into the half.Â
The second half saw an increase of urgency from Pepperdine with four of the team's five shots coming in the latter 45 minutes. Despite this, the Aggies held strong defensively, yielding zero corners to the Waves. Utah State ran away with the game, scoring in the 56th and 68th minute.Â
Pepperdine opened the 2024 season with a 0-4 loss to Utah State.Â
