SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Senior Connor Walsh and Freshman Matt Queen garnered the honor for West Coast Conference Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the conference announced Monday.
Â
Walsh, an outfielder out of Niceville, Fla. recorded 12 RBIs this weekend, largely due to his three home runs, including a grand slam in Thursday's 15-5 win against Gonzaga. Hitting .583 on the weekend, the senior was a large part of the first sweep of the season that secured a spot in the WCC tournament.
Â
Â
Queen, a RHP from Manhattan, N.Y., entered Saturday's game with a one-run lead and the first conference tournament berth in six years on the line. Through 2.1 IP, Queen only allowed two hits and recorded two strikeouts to send the Waves to postseason play. With his first save of the season, Queen is the first player to earn Freshman of the Week for Pepperdine.
Â
Â
The Waves swept the Bulldogs of Gonzaga at Patterson Baseball Complex this weekend, only the third team to do so since 2007 to slide into the sixth seed in the conference.
Â
Walsh has started in all 51 games for Pepperdine this season with a batting average of .299, recording four home runs and 11 doubles. His career-high seven RBIs came Thursday with three hits in five at-bats. His fielding percentage hovers sits at .922 with a stint as a third baseman earlier this season.
