STILLWATER, Okla. — Pepperdine men's tennis freshman Edward Winter begins his stint in the NCAA Singles Championships tomorrow against Tennessee junior Shunsuke Mitsui at 3 p.m. CT/1 p.m. PT.
All matches will be played at Greenwood Tennis Center, located in Stillwater, Okla. If available, live stream and live stat links will be found on the men's tennis team's schedule page on pepperdinewaves.com.
Winter is the second player under head coach Adam Schaechterle to earn an NCAA Singles Championship berth, joining Daniel De Jonge, who made the field twice from 2022-23. The 2024 West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year is one of two players from the WCC to earn a bid to the NCAA Singles Championship; he joins San Diego's Oliver Tarvet, who is the 7-seed.
Putting together a solid freshman campaign, the Adelaide, Australia native makes his NCAA Singles debut after being battle-tested all season atop Pepperdine's lineup. Winter has an 18-15 overall record, however, the true freshman played 13 of those matches against opponents who made the NCAA Singles field. The WCC Freshman of the Year has been nationally ranked all season, and he was 51st in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Singles Poll.
As for Mitsui, the junior from Shizuoka, Japan posted a 23-6 record at mostly the second position to help Tennessee reach the NCAA quarterfinals. He earned All-SEC First Team honors in singles, was ranked as high as 16th in the nation this season and notched seven wins over ranked singles opponents. This is Mitsui's first NCAA Singles Tournament appearance.
Should Winter win, he will face the winner between 2-seed Eliot Spizzirri of Texas and Filippo Moroni of Wake Forest — two players who just faced off in the NCAA semifinals on Saturday — in the second round.
