MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team fell Saturday at Eddy D. Field Stadium after a San Francisco grand slam in the sixth inning secured the lead for the remainder of the game.
Â
The Waves (11-20, 5-3) took an early lead but a six-run sixth inning by the Dons (16-15, 1-4) in combination with insurance runs in the final two innings would give them enough to win as Pepperdine was unable to respond, losing 11-2.
Â
BIG WAVES
Â
Junior outfielder
Luke Pemberton (Boulder, Colo.) gave the Waves a 1-0 lead in the second with a double to right field.
Â
Senior outfielder
Connor Walsh (Niceville, Fla.) recorded the other RBI of the day with a sac fly to right field.
Â
RECAP
Â
The scoreboard would stay at zeros until the bottom of the second inning. Walsh started things off taking a walk. Advancing to second with a flyout from junior catcher
Andrew Savage (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada), Walsh was able to cross home plate after Pemberton sent a ball to the base of the right field wall, recording a double. Pepperdine led 1-0 by the end of the second.
Â
The Dons recorded one hit in the top of the third but could not convert it to a run before the Waves were back on offense.
Â
Starting the inning with a runner on, senior outfielder
Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y.) took his base after being hit by a pitch. Junior infielder
Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) followed by putting runners on second and third with no outs after doubling to right field. With freshman utility player
Corwin Hemmingsen (Cave Creek, Ariz.) also getting hit by a pitch, bases were loaded. Only one out recorded, Walsh sent a ball deep enough into right field to score Bradshaw, recording a sac fly. The Waves end the third inning up 2-0.
Â
Pitchers were efficient in the next two innings with only one hit being recorded between 13 batters. However, San Francisco broke things open in the top of the sixth inning. Between four hits, including one grand slam and two defensive errors, the Dons put up six to lead 6-2 by the middle of the inning.
Â
Adding five more insurance runs, San Francisco recorded four runs on two hits in the eighth as well as an additional run thanks to a sac fly in the ninth.
Â
With two hits through the final four innings, the Waves could not get a man across home plate to answer. Pepperdine dropped game two of the series 11-2.
