SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — For the third time this season, Pepperdine women's tennis junior Savannah Broadus was named the West Coast Conference's Singles Player of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
This is Broadus' sixth weekly singles award of her career and the tenth weekly award she has won this season. Broadus and doubles partner Janice Tjen have won the WCC's Doubles Team of the Week award seven times.
Last week against #21 San Diego and Saint Mary's, Broadus went 2-0 while playing in the top half of Pepperdine's singles ladder. Broadus is now 25-10 on the year with a 14-4 mark in dual singles play; she is undefeated in WCC play at 5-0.
First, the junior from Carrollton, Texas beat Jordyn McBride of USD 6-2, 6-3 in the Waves' convincing 4-0 sweep of the Toreros last Friday. In that match, Broadus never needed to mount a major comeback as she beat McBride in straight sets to claim her fourth-consecutive victory. Less than 24 hours later, Broadus blanked MiaAngelina Ruja of Saint Mary's 6-0, 6-0 to not only clinch Pepperdine's win over the Gaels, but also complete the program's eighth-consecutive unbeaten conference season to clinch the regular-season title.
Broadus and the #6 Waves will head to San Diego for the WCC Tournament, held at the Aztec Tennis Center on the campus of San Diego State University from April 25-27. Pepperdine has a first-round bye; it will face either 4-seed LMU or 5-seed Saint Mary's in the semifinals on April 26 at 1:30 p.m.
