SPOKANE, Wash. — The #7 Pepperdine women's tennis team capped off its final road trip of the West Coast Conference schedule with a 7-0 sweep at Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon.
The Waves (13-6, 4-0 WCC) won the doubles point, then clinched the match over the Bulldogs (7-13, 1-5 WCC) with Jasmine Conway's win on court five. Sunday's win was Pepperdine's 76th-consecutive dual-match win over a WCC opponent, extending a win streak that dates back to April 2015. Heading into the final week of conference play, all four of Pepperdine's wins in conference play have been sweeps.
In doubles, Conway and Lisa Zaar went up a break on Brooke Bittner and Lia Espinal early, but the Zags broke back in the third game to put the match back on serve. Conway and Zaar broke the Zags in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead, then with Zaar back to serve, the Waves won all four points in the seventh game to consolidate the break. The Waves broke the Zags for the match off a backhand down the line from Zaar to cap off their 6-2 win.
Meanwhile, on court one, #2 Savannah Broadus and Janice Tjen's match against Tiegan Aitken and Kianna Oda was on serve until the Waves broke the Zags in the eighth game for a 5-3 lead. However, the Zags broke back on deuce point in the ninth game to stay alive. Aitken and Oda made things interesting by overcoming three straight match points in the next game to hold on deuce point for the 5-5 tie. The hold proved to be pivotal, as it gave Gonzaga enough time to win 6-4 on court two.
Both teams held to force a tiebreak, which saw the Waves rattle off five straight points off good serving from Tjen and good reflexes from Broadus at the net. The Waves didn't look back after the changeover, as they won 7-6 (1) off a winner from Tjen at the net.
In singles, all six Pepperdine players won in straight sets to complete the sweep. At the sixth position, Vivian Yang sped through her match against Caroline Werneli to give Pepperdine a 2-0 lead. Yang blanked Werneli in a 25-minute-long first set, then won her first three games of the second set before Werneli got on the board. Werneli held on deuce point for 4-2 in the sixth game, but Yang won the next eight points to finish off her 6-0, 6-2 win.
Thanks to #13 Broadus' win over Ella Nielsen at the third position, the Waves extended their lead to 3-0. Broadus won the first three games of her first set before Nielsen held on deuce point in the fourth. The Pepperdine junior then held serve and broke Nielsen on deuce point en route to winning her first set 6-1. The second set saw Broadus win her first four games before Nielsen held on deuce point in the fifth game. During the final game, Broadus won all four points to break Nielsen for the match, capping off her 6-1, 6-1 win.
At the fifth position, Conway clinched the match for Pepperdine for the second time this season. Her match against Brooke Bittner was on serve until the fourth game, when Conway broke Bittner for a 3-1 lead before cruising to a 6-2 first-set win. In the second, Conway went up a break, then both players traded breaks in the next two games before Conway rattled off the next three games for her match-clinching 6-2, 6-1 win.
The rest of the matches were played out. At the first position, #52 Tjen beat Emily Robertson handily in the first set 6-1, then fended off Robertson as she tried to force a tiebreak third set. Tjen went up 4-1 in the second set, yet Robertson won the next three games to tie the second set at four games all. But Tjen held serve in the ninth game, then broke Robertson for the match in her 6-1 6-4 win.
Over on court four, #94 Anna Campana rallied in her first set against Tiegan Aitken before taking control in the second for her win in straight sets. Aitken led 3-1 early in the first set until Campana won the next two games to put the match back on serve. Campana held on a pivotal deuce point for a 4-3 lead, then won the next two games to take the first set 6-3. In the second set, Campana won the first three games before Aitken held serve in the fourth game, then the match was played on serve until Campana broke Aitken on deuce point for a 5-2 lead. Campana would hold serve in the final game to complete her 6-3, 6-2 win.
Finally, #14 Zaar fended off an upset-minded Kianna Oda at the second position to complete the shutout. The Pepperdine senior went up a break early in the first set, both players traded breaksmidway through, and then Zaar won a key break point in the eighth game for a 5-3 lead. After winning the first set 6-3, Zaar overcame Oda winning an early break point in the second set and surged down the stretch en route to a 6-3, 6-3 win.
