Waves Fall in Close Battle to Mustangs

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team dropped a close game to California Polytechnic State University despite out-hitting them 12-9.

Pepperdine (3-10) would fight from behind early after falling behind by three runs against Cal Poly (4-7) in the first inning. Steadily digging out of the hole, the Waves would be down 3-2 by the end of the third before a pair of scoreless innings created a defensive-minded game. Both teams found another run in the next two innings, but it was not long enough for the Waves to find the equalizer with a final score of 4-3 favoring the Mustangs.

BIG WAVES

Graduate infielder Brady Renck (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) went 3-for-5 on the day, including an RBI.

Junior infielder Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) hit his second home run of the season and tallied one RBI.

Junior catcher Andrew Savage (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) hit .500 in the game going 2-for-4.

RECAP

Pepperdine found themselves down early, entering the top of the second down 0-3. Things would not stay that way for long as Renck opened the inning with a single. Senior outfielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif.) followed with a bunt placed perfectly, allowing two on with no outs. Senior outfielder Connor Walsh (Niceville, Fla.) successfully placed his own bunt down to load the bases. Junior infielder Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz.) grounded out to first, successfully scoring Renck, bringing the score to 3-1 Mustangs.

The third inning would take less at-bats to score as leadoff junior Julian Nunez would hit his second home run of the year, sailing the ball over the left field wall to cut the Cal Poly lead to one.

The fourth and fifth innings would see no one cross home plate as the score stayed locked at 3-2. Tacking one on in the bottom of the sixth, Cal Poly took a 4-2 lead going into the final three innings of the game.

Senior Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y.) would kickstart the seventh for the Waves with a double down the left field line. With two outs, Renck knocked a single into left field, scoring Bradshaw from second. By the end of the seventh, the Waves had cut the Mustang lead to a single run.

Pepperdine would run out of time to get one back, losing to Cal Poly 3-4.
