NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team left 10 on base in a midweek loss to California State University Northridge.
Â
The Waves (5-16) got out to an early lead but the Matadors (11-9) were able to match Pepperdine's three runs and then some by the end of the second inning. A three-run homer by CSUN in the fourth would give them enough insurance for the remainder of the game, beating Pepperdine 8-4.
Â
BIG WAVES
Â
Junior catcher
Andrew Savage (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) hit one of the Waves' three doubles on the day and tallied an RBI on a sacrificial fly.
Â
Freshman RHP
Adam Troy (Houston, Texas) allowed no hits and recorded two strikeouts through 2.2 innings pitched.
Â
RECAP
Â
Leadoff hitter
Brady Renck (Longmont, Colo.) set the tone for the Waves with a double in center field to start the game. Junior infielder
Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) kept the momentum going by singling to left field leaving the bases loaded with no outs with senior outfielder
Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y.) previously reaching on a walk. After two strikeouts and a fielder's choice, the Matadors were able to escape the inning with no damage done.
Â
However, CSUN would not be so lucky to escape Pepperdine's offense in the second inning. Savage stepped up to the plate with two on thanks to graduate outfielder
Nick Upstill (Huntington Beach, Calif.) being hit by a pitch and freshman utility player
Corwin Hemmingsen (Cave Creek, Ariz.) reaching on a walk. Savage was able to earn a hit on a fielder's choice, leaving bases loaded for Renck. Going 2-2 on the day thus far, Renck singled down to left field, scoring Upstill. Another walk would score a second run and Nunez would put the ball in play, scoring Savage. The Waves ended the top of the second up 3-0.
Â
The Matadors would strike back quickly, recording four runs on five singles in the bottom of the second inning.
Â
The third inning would fall quiet from both teams, but the bottom of the fourth would be where things start to slip out of reach for Pepperdine. Down 4-3, CSUN designated hitter Kevin Fitzer would blast a three run home run over the left field wall making it a 7-3 game in favor of the home team.
Â
The Waves would match a one-run seventh inning by the Matadors in the top of the eighth with singles from Upstill and Hemmingsen, but could not overcome the fourth inning home run.
Â
Pepperdine fell to CSUN 8-4.
