NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Pepperdine baseball team fought a tough battle against Tulane University in a game extended over three hours thanks to thunderstorms.
Â
Pepperdine (4-14) struck first in the top of the fourth, but Tulane (11-7) responded with a series of hits and a solo home run to give them the 2-1 lead. The Waves would tie it in the top of the sixth before a two and a half hour weather delay, but the offense would be caught in a standstill and the Green Wave would find another home run in the seventh to win 3-2.Â
Â
BIG WAVES
Â
Sophomore RHP
Nick Bonn (Laguna Beach, Calif.) threw 5.0 innings and a record-high seven strikeouts.
Â
Junior infielder
Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) hit 2-for-3 including a double, an RBI, and game-tying home run in the sixth inning for his third of the season.
Â
RECAP
Â
The first three innings of the game would be a pitcher's battle as Bonn retired five of the first seven batters, allowing only one hit.
Â
Nunez would start the Waves offense with a double to left field in the top of the fourth inning. Junior infielder
Luke Pemberton (Boulder, Colo.) singled to left, advancing Nunez to third and putting two on with one out. Junior infielder Justin Rebrook (The Woodlands, Texas) would reach first and score Nunez on a ground ball, putting the Waves up 1-0.
Â
Despite having two men on with one out in the bottom of the fourth, a heads-up play by Rebrook would take the Green Wave's lead runner off the bases and leave the score unchanged.
Â
Tulane found their first home run of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two more hits, another Green Wave would cross home plate and the Waves were down 1-2.
Â
It was Nunez again for Pepperdine who would find a hit and homer over the left field wall. Shortly after, thunderstorms in the area delayed the game over two and a half hours. Pepperdine would come back up to bat without a hit, ending the inning tied at two.
Â
The third homer of the day came for Tulane as another solo home run was sent over the right field wall. Pepperdine would go into the eighth trailing by one run.
Â
Senior outfielder
Connor Walsh (Niceville, Fla.) led the Waves off with a double down the left field line. After a walk and a dropped-third strike, bases were loaded as another rain delay ensued, lasting for about half an hour. As the rain subsided, so did the Waves offense as no one was able to find home plate before the end of the inning.
Â
The Green Wave would come out victorious 3-2 to open the series.
