MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team ended the series against Western Michigan at Eddy D. Field Stadium Sunday.
The Waves (1-7) recorded nine walks across five pitchers as the bullpen struggled to find rhythm. The Broncos batted just under .500 on the day, finding 17 hits through 35 at-bats. WMU went scoreless through the final four innings but found 19 runs through the first three, prevailing over Pepperdine 19-1.
BIG WAVES
Freshman utility player Corwin Hemmingsen (Cave Creek, Ariz.) made his pitching debut in the bottom of the fourth, recording four strikeouts through 4.0 innings pitched.
Redshirt junior outfielder Luke Pemberton (Boulder, Colo.) went 2-3 on the day, including two doubles and the sole RBI.
GAME RECAP
The Waves struggled from the beginning of the day allowing the first run to come in the top of the first. After failing to answer in the bottom of the inning, the Broncos put up 12 runs in the top of the second, taking a commanding lead early.
Despite a leadoff double from Pemberton and a single by graduate infielder Brady Renck (Longmont, Colo.) Pepperdine was not able to convert any runs and would end the second inning scoreless.
WMU tacked on another six in the top of the third off a handful of singles and walks. The Waves were able to avoid a blank sheet thanks to Pemberton's double in the bottom of the third, scoring junior Justin Rubin (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) who reached first on a walk.
The remainder of the game would fall quiet from both sides, ending in a 19-1 loss for the Waves.
