Malibu, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team's three-run ninth inning rally was not enough to push past Utah at Eddy D. Field Stadium Saturday, as the Utes took their first win in the two-game series.
The Waves (1-2) held the Utes (2-1) in the first inning but fell behind 5-0 by the end of the second. Utah was able to tack on four more runs before Pepperdine broke things up with a run in the sixth. The Waves started to rally with a streak in the bottom of the ninth, tacking on three runs, but eventually fell 9-4.
BIG WAVES
Senior Connor Bradshaw (New Rochelle, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
Redshirt freshman RHP Jacob Grossman (Towson, Md.) made his collegiate debut tallying three strikeouts in 2.0 innings pitched.
Senior outfielder Charles Masino (Newbury Park, Calif.) got a rally going in the bottom of the ninth after a double down the leftfield line, ushering in a run before scoring himself.
Graduate infielder Brady Renck (Longmont, Colo.) tallied an RBI himself after singling to centerfield, finishing with a run to continue the Waves' rally.
GAME RECAP
After a scoreless first inning by both teams, Utah broke it open in the top of the second by scoring five runs on five hits, including three doubles.
The Utes bats stayed hot in the top of the fourth, when Core Jackson homered to left field, increasing the Waves' deficit to 7-0.
Pepperdine put up a run in the bottom of the 6th when a single down the right field line by junior infielder Julian Nunez (Encinitas, Calif.) turned into a run after a sac fly by Bradshaw. Utah matched with an additional two in the top of the eighth and ninth.
The bottom of the ninth was a fiery one for the Waves. After redshirt senior Connor Walsh (Niceville, Fla.) walked to first, he was brought home on a combination of Masino's double and Renck's single. Redshirt junior Luke Pemberton's (Boulder, Colo.) put the ball in play to advance both baserunners, allowing junior Cole Sheehan (Phoenix, Ariz.) to bring Renck home off a single down the middle.
The Waves ended up falling to Utah with a final score of 9-4.
